Sentencing law in NSW

Sentencing is a complex process which balances competing community interests, including the need to punish offenders as well as

  • promote rehabilitation
  • prevent further offending and
  • protect the community.

This section provides information to assist in understanding the sentencing process. The information is largely based on the provisions of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999.
